3. Spot Turns

3. Spot Turns
Spot Turns are two forward steps and a Chasse to side danced solo by the leader and/or follower, circling either to L or R. When turning to left, commence with RF. LF may remain in place while the turn is made around the foot. Likewise, the ball of RF may remain in place when turning to right. When danced at the same time as partner, the leader turns to left while the follower turns to right, or vice versa. Spot turns may also be danced individually by the leader or the follower while partner dances, for example, a Time Step or 5 Steps of Closed Basic Movement. The Spot Turn is a popular ending to the New York, Hand to Hand and many other figures, and may also be danced as a Switch Turn as described in the technique charts. A complete turn is made when a couple commence and end facing each other. 7/8 turn is made when commenced in Open PP or Open CPP and ended facing partner, or when commenced facing partner and ended in Open PP or Open CPP. 3/4 turn is made when commenced in Open PP and ended in Open CPP or vice versa, or when commenced in R or LSP and ended facing partner. The commencing and finishing hold will depend on the preceding and following figure. These are listed at the end of the Switch Turn charts
3b. Underarm Turns to Left and Right
For the Underarm Turn to L., the leader dances 1-5 of the Cha Cha Basic Movement while leading the follower to dance a Spot or Switch Turn to L. by raising the left arm and circling it counterclockwise around the follower's head. It can commence in closed position (as in charts), or in open or CPP with L to R hand hold. For the Underarm Turn to R., the leader dances 6-10 of the Cha Cha Basic Movement while leading the follower to dance a Spot or Switch Turn to R. by raising the left arm and circling it clockwise around the follower's head. It can commence in closed position (as in charts), or in open or CPP with L to R hand hold.
