1. Sur Place

1. Sur Place
The Sur Place is a series of steps danced in Closed or Contact Position replacing the weight from one foot to the other, each step taking one beat of music. The weight changes are danced with strong pressure into the ball of the foot with heel just off, or lightly in contact with the floor. The figure normally commences with the leader's RF (follower's LF) and is taken with the counts "1,2,3,4". The ball of foot contact with floor is released on each step although the toe is not raised. No turn, or a gradual turn of up to a 1/4 to R or L may be used over four steps. When danced with turn, the partner on the outside of the turn (leader or follower) will dance very small chass\u00e9s. Sur Place is used as a link between figures, to achieve a desired alignment and to facilitate correct phrasing. Note for Member & above levels: Sur Place may be danced with elevation, high on toes, or gradually rising to toes and/or lowering over a series of steps. Example: Appel on leader's RF (follower's LF) with body turn to L., achieving promenade shape, joined hands lowered, counted "1". Continue with 3 Sur Place, LRL (follower RLR) turning to R, gradually rising to toes, achieving counter promenade shape, counted "2,3,4". Continue with Sur Place, RLRL (follower LRLR), turning to L. and gradually lowering, achieving promenade shape , counted "5,6,7,8". Other combinations could be used. Suggested styling for Member & above levels:
  • When making no turn or when turning to L, use a promenade shape with joined hands lowered.
  • When turning to R, use a counter-promenade shape.
